If you read the bible out of context, many take away the fact that not one sin is greater than another. This is not true. Before I explain, I do not put down specific bible verses (meaning the book, the chapter or the verse) in my belief; it takes away from the person's responsibility to look it up and pray for the discernment to interpret it properly.
Yes, there are sins that are greater than others. We can start with using the word abomination. Going into the seven deadly sins. Followed by the Ten Commandments. But let's simplify things. Going back to Jesus and Pontius Pilate, Jesus said the sin is greater of those... You can look it up and read the rest. God had, Himself, stated that one sin is greater than all others. And that is bearing of false witness. A simple definition of this is-that if we lie about somebody to someone that is bearing false witness. Though there are many examples, is lying about someone that is actually specifically about a good thing, is that still a sin? Is that still bearing of false witness? Is it still frowned upon by God? Well, you'd have to ask God about that one.
But when you specifically go out of your way knowing that you are lying about someone, making up something that is bad and wrong, that is the easiest definition. You can even do it to someone about them. I will give you an example. If you are cheating on your significant other, and they suspect it, and you continue to tell them, 'You're crazy, I never cheated, How dare you think that of me?' And then eventually it comes out that you were cheating. Yes, this is an example of bearing false witness to someone about them. I believe that bearing false witness encompasses so many different things, not just lying, but manipulation, empowerment, causing pure destruction on someone else's life.
So then I ask you, when is one sin not greater than another? The day you ask for forgiveness for it. God says when you do this, it is no more. Simply, it never happened. How lovely would it be if we were this forgiving? It all adds up to humility. Yet, humility without grace is impossible. Grace without conviction is irresponsible. Strength without compassion is forgettable. And love without action is just that.
